I wanted to share this tidbit of information from a poster on a popular website regarding burglars, funerals, and Minnesota probate estates.
This is an important lesson to keep in mind for heirs, executors, and personal representatives of probate estates:
We at the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office want to remind you to be mindful when posting information about a loved one who passed away in the local papers. BURGLARS DO READ THE PAPER…
A few tips to prevent you or your loved ones from becoming a victim of burglary or theft:
- Make SURE all of the doors to your residence and garages are locked and secure – also vehicles
- Posting information in the paper about a loved ones passing may be how things were done in the past but remember that with the internet and other means of searching for personal information, it is as easy as ever
- If a loved one has passed, make sure their residence or apartment has an individual who checks on it regularly and knows if things appear out of the ordinary.
Thank you to Brian Klawiter for posting the above. I often explain these problems to clients but it is good to have a reminder from a Sheriff’s Office.
